Ways to keep your website simple

Whether you’re responsible for your own website, are building one from scratch, or are part of a web design team, you’re probably always looking for ways to keep your website simple. Less is more when I comes to web design. You want elements that are visually appealing, and content that is gripping, but the design is the first thing anyone will see. Think of your website design as the cover of a book. It’s the first thing people see and notice when they come to your website. If the design is too complex or scattered, they will probably leave.

If you are trying to simplify your website and looking for some pro tips, then you’re in the right place. Here are some tips to follow so your website is a work of art. Small steps are all it takes, and even the smallest change can make a big impact. Just putting more content above the fold, limiting the color scheme, and cutting down on pages can make a difference in a positive way.

Make key elements the focus

Yes, this seems like an obvious one, so why are we even mentioning it? A staggering number of websites still forget about this simple task, and it devolves into their website being a sea of elements presented in a non-cohesive way. Everything on your website is important, but what is the most important? That piece of content should be the star, and so on and so forth.

Get rid of the clutter

Anything that isn’t pertinent shouldn’t be given a space on your website. You might see tons of widgets, and photo galleries, and sidebars, and teasers, and all of that on other websites, but you should eliminate what isn’t serving much of a purpose. This is where you can rely on your analytics to determine what elements are preforming well and what is worth keeping around. If your photo gallery is rarely viewed or not often updated, give it the nix.

Trim your page count

Depending on what kind of a website you have, this might be easier for some more than others. Having less pages makes your website look cleaner and makes it easier to navigate for your readers. Pages tend to get piled up when their content expires but the page still remains, either as an empty page or with outdated content. Keep track of these kinds of pages this way you can delete them when they are no longer needed.

Aim for above the fold

Most people who visit websites spend their time browsing the above the fold content. We’re all guilty of it, and if you make it a point to put your most relevant content and any call to action above the fold your website will be better for it.

Don’t overdo color

Color can be fun. Maybe in a coloring book, but not on a website. Too much color makes your website look childish and hard to look at. Stick to a color scheme with neutrals and only 2-3 different colors.
